Description
Most ctools take so called “observation definition” XML files as input.
This is something every end-user has to know a bit and thus should be part of the documentation:
http://cta.irap.omp.eu/ctools/
The current format is explained in the 1DC PDF document and can be seen in the irf_binned.xml
, irf_unbinned.xml
, obs_binned.xml
and @obs_unbinned.xml files in the GammaLib repo at https://github.com/gammalib/gammalib/tree/devel/inst/cta/test/data .
Recurrence
No recurrence.
History

I wanted to file this in the ctools issue tracker, because I was thinking about high-level end-user docs.

Have you had a look into http://gammalib.sourceforge.net/user_manual/modules/cta.html#describing-cta-observations-using-xml?

This is exactly what I was looking for.
So the only thing missing is linking to that documentation from the ctools documentation.
E.g. a user that sees “observation definition XML file” as a possible input in the ctlike documentation needs a link to find that part of the Gammalib docs.
